Vol. 130 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fermoy County Hospital Appointments.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has satisfied himself that the terms of the Local Government (Minor Officers) Order, 1943 (S.R. & O., 46 of 1943), have been complied with in regard to Irish being an essential subject for the recent nursing appointments to Fermoy County Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that the terms of the Local Government (Minor Officers) Order, 1943 (S. R. & O., 46 of 1943), have been complied with in regard to the making of Irish essential for the recent appointment of ambulance driver at Fermoy County Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has satisfied himself that the terms of the Local Government (Minor Officers) Order, 1943 (S.R. & O., of 1943), have been complied with in the making of permanent appointments in Fermoy County Hospital with regard to the obtaining of confirmation from persons represented as having given testimonials to applicants.

asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that the terms of the Local Government (Minor Officers) Order, 1943 (S.R. & O. 46 of 1943) have been complied with in regard to subjecting applicants for posts which require a practical knowledge of machinery, such as ambulance drivers and steam plant attendants, to a practical test.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 to 18 together.

The appointments in question are made by the local authority in pursuance of the Order referred to. There is nothing in that Order governing the matters mentioned by the Deputy.

If such is the case what is the idea of having one of the examiners putting questions in Irish to the applicants for the post of ambulance driver and steam attendant and not putting questions in Irish to the nurses? What was the idea of having an Irish examination at all?

I do not know.

I do not know, either.

The Minister gave an honest reply, anyhow.
