Written Answers. - Appointments to State and Semi-State Bodies
There are no State or semi-State bodies, of the kind to which the Deputy's question would seem to refer, the members of which are appointed by the Taoiseach.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of State or semi-State bodies, etc., to which members are appointed by him, who receive remuneration in respect of their services on such bodies, (a) the year of establishment, (b) the statute under which the appointments are made by him, (c) the terms of office of the members, (d) the names and dates of appointment of present members, (e) whether the members are full-time or part-time, and (f) the rate of remuneration paid to the members.
There are two semi-State bodies to which members are appointed by me and who receive remuneration in respect of their services on such bodies, namely, the Hospitals Commission and the Voluntary Health Insurance Board.
The particulars are as follows:—
I. Hospitals Commission: (a) 1933. (b) Public Hospitals Act, 1933. (c) Members hold office for a period of two years but are eligible for reappointment at the end of that period. (d) The present members are— Michael W. Doran, B.E., Chairman, last appointed 21st September, 1957; Dr. John P. Shanley, appointed 24th October, 1958; Michael Kilroy, last appointed 24th September, 1958; John McCann, last appointed 27th May, 1958; John J. McWeeney, appointed 4th March, 1957; Patrick Cogan, appointed 4th June, 1957. (e) The chairman is full-time and the other members are part-time. (f) The yearly remuneration of the chairman is £1,500; of Dr. Shanley £800, and of each of the other members £500.
II. Voluntary Health Insurance Board: (a) 1957. (b) Voluntary Health Insurance Act, 1957. (c) Members are appointed for a fixed period not exceeding five years. The period of office of the present members is five years. (d) The present members, who were appointed on the 12th February, 1957, are—James Troy, F.C.A. (Chairman); Michael P. Linehan; Thomas C.J. O'Connell, M.D., M.Ch., F.A.C.S., B.Sc.; Henry B. O'Hanlon; Patrick J. Shaw. (e) Part-time. (f) The yearly remuneration of the chairman is £500 and of each of the other members is £250.
In addition, I have the function of appointing the chairman, but not the members, of the Medical Research Council, a non-statutory body set up in 1937. The present chairman, appointed for a term of four years from 25th January, 1957, is Professor J.F. Cunningham, who, like other members of the council resident in Dublin, receives a fee of three guineas in respect of meetings attended by him.

There are no State or semi-State bodies, etc., the members of which have been appointed by the Minister for Social Welfare and receive remuneration in respect of their services on such bodies.
