Vol. 176 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Crannagh River, Roscommon.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will include as an exceptional measure the completion of the drainage of the Crannagh river, County Roscommon, in the proposed scheme outlined in his statement of 10th June, 1959, for drainage works on small rivers which discharge directly into the sea, in order that the flooding caused by the present condition of the Crannagh may be overcome.

My statement indicated that the matter in question had been referred to the Office of Public Works. Action on the lines suggested by the Deputy is not, therefore, a matter for me.

Do I take it that the Minister has washed his hands completely of the Crannagh River by suggesting that it is now a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works?

I take it the Deputy read the statement to which he referred in his question.

May I ask the Minister whether, if he is not prepared to take steps in connection with this question, he will sanction a request for a grant which was recently put forward by the Roscommon County Council?

I shall bear the Deputy's request in mind.

Is the Minister in a position to let the county council know, in the near future, what the position is?

That depends.

In view of the fact that this matter of drainage has the support of all Parties in the constituency and, further, in view of the serious damage done over a matter of years, will he expedite the proceedings?

I promise the Deputy I shall expedite a decision.

I hope it will be favourable.

I hope so.
