Vol. 178 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Review of Trade Agreement.

26.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he will take steps to have reviewed trade agreements with countries which will not buy Irish agricultural produce.

It is a principal aim of Government policy to secure, by way of formal trade agreements or otherwise, the maximum outlets for our products and, in particular, for our agricultural products. It will be appreciated at the same time that a trade agreement represents a balance of advantage for both parties and may thus fall short, from the point of view of each party, of what it would desire to achieve. The Deputy may, however, rest assured that it is the practice of the Government in negotiating trade agreements to endeavour to obtain the maximum advantages for our exports and to keep all agreements concluded under review.

In view of the exceptional character of the answer of the Minister for Health, the delay caused and the length of time taken up by the first Question, would the Chair consider inquiring from the House if members would agree to a further 15 minutes to dispose of Parliamentary Questions?

That is a matter for the House.

As a matter of fact, it would not be convenient to allow Questions to continue. Various appointments have been made.

Very well.
