Vol. 403 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gleeson Report.

Paul McGrath

Question:

11 Mr. McGrath asked the Taoiseach the number of the 180 recommendations of the Gleeson report which have been implemented to date.

To date approximately 100 of the recommendations of the Commission on Remuneration and Conditions of Service in the Defence Forces have been implemented.

As indicated in a reply to questions on 25 October 1990, the remaining recommendations are being examined and will be implemented as quickly as possible. However, many of the recommendations are quite complex and the time-frame for their implementation is dependent on the degree of complexity and on the consultative process with the elected representatives of the various military ranks.

Do I take it that the Taoiseach is giving an assurance that all the recommendations of the Gleeson report will be implemented?

That is the objective, yes. The Government have already indicated that they fully accept the Gleeson report.

They will be implementing every one of them?

Perhaps I should qualify that by saying that if there is some impossibility we will have to take that into account but, by and large, the objective is to implement the report.

Is implementation of the recommendations dependent in any way on the report referred to in the previous question?

It is not dependent on the report of the study group?

No, except in so far as we hope the report of the study group will facilitate the implementation of the recommendations.
