Joint Committee on Transport and Communications

This new Committee has a very broad remit over policy areas which impinge on the lives of citizens in every corner of the country.  In shadowing the work of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, the Committee considers general policy matters relating to the functions of those two Departments and EU policy priorities in those areas.

Week commencing Monday 8th of April 2013

The Committee will not be meeting until after the Easter recess. 

Recently published Report: Report on Promoting a Sustainable Future for the Post Office Network The report calls for the potential of the Post Office network to assume responsibility for the processing of a range of Government services to be explored.

The next Report due to be published by the Committee will be on tackling the abuse of social media.  The recommendations to be made in this Report will be based on the findings of the Committee's recent consultative meetings with concerned stakeholders.

This Committee was established on 12 June 2012. It assumed relevant responsibilities from the Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture and the Joint Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

On 8 November, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications engaged in wide-ranging discussion with Siim Kallas, the European Commissioner for Transport on the priorities for the upcoming Irish Presidency of the European Union in the area of transport.
