Help sought for people with disabilities to access public transport
An update on the Health (Transport Support) Bill, the aim of which is to facilitate financial contributions to people with disabilities who are unable to access public transport was sought from the Taoiseach in the Dáil by Cork South West Fianna Fáil Deputy Margaret Murphy O’Mahony.
“People's lives have been put on hold while they wait for news of this legislation,” she said. “It would enhance their well-being if it enabled them to get out of their homes.”
In reply, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said there are ongoing discussions between the Departments of Health and Public Expenditure and Reform regarding the cost of introducing a new scheme. “I have politely encouraged both Departments and their respective Ministers to progress this matter with a view to having legislation enacted next year,” he added.
