Micheál Martin to Appear at Meeting of European Affairs Committee

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin TD will be appearing at tomorrow’s (9th) meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs. The meeting will take place at 11:30 am in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.

The Minister’s presence at the meeting will allow committee members to question him regarding government policy on a number of issues before he attends the upcoming meeting of the General Affairs Foreign Affairs Councils in Brussels next week.

The principal matter on the agenda for that meeting is the upcoming European Council Meeting.

Among the key issue to be considered include:

  • Possible need to change the EU Treaties to give effect to the European Stability Mechanism
  • Progress on Icelandic, Croatian and Turkish accession to the EU
  • Agreement on the EU’s citizens’ Initiative
  • A number of Foreign Policy Issues, including Iran, Afghanistan, Middle East Peace Process, Somalia and Sudan
