Public Service Oversight Committee to engage with An Coimisinéir Teanga

The Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will today meet with An Coimisinéir Teanga, An tUasal Rónán Ó Domhnaill, to discuss the findings of his recently released Annual Report 2014 before discussing the adherence of Public Service Bodies to their responsibilities under the Official Languages Act.

The meeting takes place today, Wednesday 21st October at 4 pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000.

Committee Chairman, Pádraig MacLochlainn TD, said “As the Committee with responsibility for Public Service Oversight, this meeting today will allow us, as a Committee, to really engage with Mr. Ó Domhnaill. The recently launched Annual Report gives us a good overview of the business that An Coimisinéir Teanga conducted in 2014 and the issues that they faced. Of particular interest to members will be an update in relation to public bodies such as Iarnród Éireann, the HSE and the Office of Public Works ignoring the legislation passed by the Oireachtas for signage in both Irish and English. Areas such as recruitment, complaints and investigations, compliance and communications with stakeholders will also feature in our discussion.”

“The Committee have long since had an interest in, not only the daily work of An Coimisinéir Teanga, but also in how public bodies comply with their legal requirements under the relevant legislation and how they interact with the Office. We have had a good history of engagement with An Coimisinéir Teanga since our inception and we look forward to this continuing tomorrow.“
