Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution to consider health care issues

The Oireachtas Committee on the Eight Amendment will focus on health care issues when it holds two meetings in public session this week.

On Wednesday, 11 October, the

Session A - 2 p.m. International developments in the provision of health care services in the area of termination of pregnancies

Dr Abigail Aiken, Assistant Professor, LBJ School of Public Affairs, Texas; Dr Ronald Johnson and Dr Bela Ganatra, Department of Reproductive Health and Research, World Health Organisation

Session B - 4 p.m. Health care issues arising from the Citizens' Assembly recommendations
Dr Rhona Mahony, Master, National Children’s Hospital and Professor Fergal Malone, Master, Rotunda Maternity Hospital

The Committee will meet at 1pm on Wednesday, 11 October 2017 in Committee Room 3, Leinster House. Committee proceedings will commence in public at 2pm and can be viewed live here.

On Thursday, 12 October, the committee will meet at 2pm in Committee Room 4.

Senator Catherine Noone, Chair of the Committee said: “The Committee will continue its hearings on the recommendations contained in the report from the Citizen’s assembly when we will hold two meetings this week. The hearings this week will concentrate on health care issues. Improved access to reproductive healthcare services and support facilities were among the recommendations in the report. The Committee will hear from Dr Ronald Johnson, and Dr Bela Ganatra, who will be making presentations on the international developments in the provision of health care services in the area of termination of pregnancies. Dr Rhona Mahony, Master, National Children’s Hospital, Holles St. and Professor Fergal Malone, Master, Rotunda Maternity Hospital, will make presentations on health care issues arising from the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly. Dr Brendan O’Shea, Director, Post-Graduate Resource Centre, Irish College of General Practitioners and Janice Donlon, from the HSE Sexual Health & Crisis Pregnancy Programme, will present on health care issues in primary care and crisis pregnancy management.”
