Education Committee to discuss 21st century universities

The Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection Committee will meet today, Wednesday, February 11th to discuss performance and sustainability in 21st century universities. The meeting will commence at 1pm in Committee Room 3.

11th February 2015

During today’s meeting, the Committee will hear presentations from the Irish Universities Association (IUA) as well as from Dr. Charles Larkin, Trinity College Dublin. The IUA is the representative body for Ireland's seven universities, working to develop strategy and policy to advance third and fourth level education and research.

Committee Chair, Joanna Tuffy said: “Today’s meeting will be a valuable opportunity to hear from the Irish Universities Association regarding key issues such as financial sustainability, performance and governance. In recent years, there has been some concern over the ability of Irish universities to maintain the standards in comparison with those in other States. The Committee recognises the difficult environment Irish universities are operating in, due to less funding and lower staff levels. We must ensure that graduates emerge from our universities with the best possible education and that the research conducted in our universities is at the cutting edge. There is a balance to be struck between creating leaner, more efficient systems within universities, whilst remaining cognisant of the investment needed to keep our 3rd level education system operating to the best international standards.   The Committee is greatly looking forward to hearing from the IUA and from Dr. Larkin as we discuss the issues facing the sector.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 3, Leinster House, today, Wednesday, 11th of February 2015 at 1pm. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
