Statement by Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement on the death of Harri Holkeri

On Thursday 3rd December the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement visited two integrated schools in Northern Ireland. First the Committee visited Strangford Integrated College in Carrowdore, where Principal Mark Weir and students of the College made a presentation to the committee about the history and ethos of Strangford, and the positive impact Integrated education has had for them.

The committee then visited Hazelwood Integrated Primary and Nursery School where they met a number of P7 students from different faith traditions and had the pleasure of dropping into technology and choir classes. Speaking to the Irish News about the visit, Patricia Murthagh, Principal of Hazelwood, said “in spite of the good work of our politicians at all levels, the reality of change comes from the hearts and minds of the young people we nurture and challenge in our schools. The environment in North Belfast still bristles with sectarianism and racism and we have to ensure that our children are able to have the difficult conversations if they arise”.

The atmosphere in both schools and the moving testimony offered by students of all ages reinforced the committee’s dedication to working closely with NICIE and IEF to support Integrated Education.
