The Ceann Comhairle Selection Process for the 32nd Dáil

In January 2016, the 31st Dáil approved new measures to select the next Ceann Comhairle by secret ballot. Under the changes, the Ceann Comhairle is to be selected by secret ballot and the person selected is to then be formally elected by an open vote in the Dáil. No other business may be conducted until a Ceann Comhairle is elected.

The following valid nominations were received by the Clerk of Dáil Éireann, Mr. Peter Finnegan, and were thus deemed to be candidates for the position of Ceann Comhairle:   

  1. Andrew Doyle, Wicklow;
  2. Bernard J. Durkan, Kildare North;
  3. Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, Cavan-Monaghan;
  4. Seán Ó Fearghaíl, Kildare South;
  5. Maureen O'Sullivan, Dublin Central.
