The poll closed at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday 16th July, 2002 for the panels of candidates, and on Wednesday 17th July, 2002 for the university seats.

The count for the panel seats began in Leinster House on Tuesday 16 July 2002, and concluded on Friday 19 July 2002.

Extract from Article 18 of the Constitution

  1. A general election for Seanad Éireann shall take place not later than ninety days after a dissolution of Dáil Éireann, and the first meeting of Seanad Éireann after the general election shall take place on a day to be fixed by the President on the advice of the Taoiseach.
  2. Every member of Seanad Éireann shall, unless he dies, resigns, or becomes disqualified, continue to hold office until the day before the polling day of the general election for Seanad Éireann next held after his election or nomination.

The Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr. Noel Dempsey today (2 May 2002) made Orders appointing the following dates and times for the forthcoming general election of Members to Seanad Éireann.

Panel Members

  • The period for nominations by nominating bodies will expireat noon on Friday 7th June, 2002.
  • The period for nominations by members of the Oireachtas will expire at noon on Friday 14th June, 2002.
  • The Seanad Returning Officer will sit for the completion of the panels on Thursday 20th June, 2002.
  • The ballot papers will be issued on Tuesday 2nd July, 2002.
  • The poll will close at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday 16th July, 2002.
