The 28th Dáil was dissolved on 25 April 2002, and the 29th Dáil was summoned and called together to meet at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday 6 June 2002 by the President, Mary McAleese, on the advice of the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern.

Seanad Éireann General Election 2002

The poll closed at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday 16th July, 2002 for the panels of candidates, and on Wednesday 17th July, 2002 for the university seats. The count for the panel seats began in Leinster House on Tuesday 16 July 2002, and concluded on Friday 19 July 2002.

Pursuant to an advice tendered to the President by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern under section 8 of Article 18 of the Constitution, the President fixed Thursday, 12 September 2002, for the first meeting of Seanad Éireann after the General Election.
