The Committee was established to enhance the role of the Oireachtas in the budgetary formation process. The Committee reviews the macro-economic and fiscal issues that form part of budget considerations.

Existing levels of service
Existing levels of service, or the amount of funding required by Departments to carry out their existing functions, form a significant element of the annual budgetary package. The Committee recommends that discrepancies between Government publications should be eliminated or explained, and that the granular detail should be consistent between years.

Post-Budget 2024 Report
With Budget 2024 taking place during a period of uncertainty arising from factors such as high interest rates and fluctuating energy prices, the Committee welcomes the establishment of the Future Ireland Fund and the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund. It also recommends a benchmarking exercise for social protection rates and an assessment of the introduction of a living wage.
