Vol. S2 No. 9

DEFENCE ACCOUNT—REFUNDED MONEY.

Do chuiris cheist cun an Aire Airgid cúpla seachtain ó shoin agus dubhairt sé go geuireadh sé freagra chugam. Dá dtabhairfeadh sé freagra béil dom do bheadh cead agam cheist eile chuir chuige. Ar a shon sin ba cheart go mbeadh cead agam ceist eile chuir chuige anois. I wish now to repeat in English what I have said. I presume that the Minister for Finance will answer a supplementary question. I put a question to the Minister for Finance a couple of weeks ago and he said he could not very well answer me that day but that he would send me an answer. If he gave me an answer on that day I would have put a supplementary question. On that account I have a right to put him another question now. It is with regard to the item in the account "money refunded." Last October I noticed there was an item like £4,000 in the Finance Account charged up against the Department of Defence account. I knew it was incorrect and consequently I questioned it. And the answer given was that there was some mistake made and that the money would be refunded. In the accounts recently submitted, I saw that there was over £4,000 refunded. I put a question asking was this connected with the money which was paid in London about which some mistake had been made. I now have got the answer, and in fact it says not. Consequently, I assume that money has not yet been refunded. It is something like £4,000 of Dáil money. Here is what he says. "There is £3,050 to be refunded." I want to know now first, upon whose authority this money was paid at all? Then, who exactly is going to refund it? He also tells me with regard to the other £1,000. "This will be settled with the auditor in London." I would like to know if the official auditor has made inquiries with regard to the other £1,000 and what will be the result?

I would ask for notice of this. The letter which has been quoted was written some weeks ago.
