CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - LAY SECONDARY TEACHERS.

To ask the Minister for Education whether he is aware that registered lay secondary teachers are, on an average, paid no more than £180 per annum, have no pensions and no security of tenure, and when he proposes to take steps to remedy this unsatisfactory state of affairs.

The £180 may probably be accepted as a middle figure, but this figure does not take cognisance of the interim grant which for the school year ended July 31st last amounted to £50 for each eligible teacher. With regard to the second part of the question the forms in secondary education must occupy the attention of this Dáil as soon as the National position permits.

With regard to questions 1 and 2 the Minister for Industry and Commerce is not present; they can be deferred.

Will we get an opportunity before the Dáil rises of asking these questions?

It is an irregular proceeding, but as these questions are down for the second time we shall make an endeavour. Sara dtosnóidh an obair, níl agam ach aon leas-rún amháin don mBun-Reacht agus léighfead anois é. Only one amendment has been received to the motion to be made to-morrow that the Constitution be read a second time. I propose to read that amendment now by way of Notice. We are endeavouring to arrange that Deputies will have copies of it before the Dáil rises this evening. We can make no better arrangement. The amendment refers to the preamble to the Constitution. It reads:—
