CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - UNEMPLOYMENT IN DUBLIN.

Mr. ALFRED BYRNE

To ask the Minister for Local Government if his department proposes to take any steps to relieve the unemployed of Dublin during the coming winter, and if he will state whether any remunerative proposals are under consideration, and, if so, when are they likely to commence.

Mr. ERNEST BLYTHE

As Minister for Local Government I have not any direct functions as regards relieving unemployment, but in the administration of State Grants connected with local administration existing unemployment is always very fully considered. The share of Dublin in the Housing Grant is £462,848 and every effort is being made by the Ministry, in co-operation with the Corporation, to develop the several schemes concerned. I learn that the payment of compensation for destroyed property will be made without any avoidable delay. These payments should have a very beneficial effect. The Government are giving consideration to proposals which will result in the diminution of unemployment in Dublin and through the country generally, but these projects must be measured by financial resources.
