Vol. 1 No. 20

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - LAY SECONDARY TEACHERS.

TOMAS O CONAILL

To ask the Minister for Education whether he is aware that large numbers of efficient and highly qualified lay Secondary Teachers have, owing to the conditions prevailing in Ireland, been obliged to emigrate to England and Scotland where suitable employment is readily obtainable; if he can state the precise number of such teachers, and whether, considering the adverse effect which this state of affairs has on the educational welfare of the country, he can say when steps will be taken to put an end to such wastage.

Mr. BLYTHE (for Minister for Education)

There is no means of ascertaining the precise number of the teachers referred to. Consideration by the Dáil of the reform of the system of Secondary Education has already been promised in reply to a question on the 18th ultimo.
