CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - VACANT POSTMASTERSHIPS.

TOMAS O CONAILL

To ask the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that vacancies for the position of Postmaster at Claremorris and Ballinasloe, and of Sub-Postmaster at Clifden, were advertised in "Iris an Phuist" of September 6th; that the existence of these vacancies did not generally come to the knowledge of possible applicants until September 9th, and that, because of the dislocation of the postal service, it was not possible for many who would otherwise apply for these positions to have their applications forwarded within the specified date, and whether, in view of these circumstances and in order to give all possible applicants a fair chance, he will consider the advisability of readvertising these positions. Further, to ask the Postmaster-General whether his attention has been called to the fact that for neither of these positions is a knowledge of the Irish language specified as being necessary, and will he consider the desirability of insisting on such qualification, especially in the case of Clifden, which is situated in an Irish-speaking district.

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. J.J. Walsh)

I have arranged for these vacancies to be re-advertised in this week's "Iris an Phuist," which is the first to be issued since the 6th September. With regard to the second portion of the question, it is the practice to enquire as to the Irish language qualifications possessed by Postmaster candidates and, in making appointments, to give due weight to applicants who have Irish. For Irish-speaking districts the policy is to appoint only those with a knowledge of Irish.
