TOMAS O CONAILL

To ask the Minister for Education whether, in connection with the Scheme of Dáil Scholarships in preparatory schools for students who intend to enter the teaching profession, he will state:—

(a) The number of Scholarships offered for the session 1922-23;

(b) The number of candidates who competed for these Scholarships;

(c) The number of such Scholarships awarded;

(d) Whether it is the intention of the Ministry to continue this scheme in future?

(for the Minister for Education): (a) The total number of Scholarships offered for competition was 50—namely, 20 for boys, and 20 for girls from the Gaedhealtacht, and 5 each for boys and girls from the Galltacht.

(b) the total number of candidates who entered for the competition was 325, but owing to difficulties of communication and travel, only 187 candidates sat for the examination. (c) Scholarships to the number of 35 have been awarded—viz., to 20 girls and 8 boys from the Gaedhealtacht and 5 girls and 2 boys from the Galltacht. (d) The question of the continuance of this scheme is, at present, under consideration.
