CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - MILITARY COURTS.

To ask the Minister for Defence if he will state how many Military Courts or Committees have been set up by him under the powers conferred on him by the Resolution of this Dáil, adopted on the 28th of September? And if he will state what sentences have been inflicted in accordance with such Resolution, and his own Proclamation published in pursuance of such Resolution, respectively, of—(a) death; (b) penal servitude; (c) imprisonment; and (d) a fine; whether with or without imprisonment and in respect of what offences such sentences have been inflicted?

The Military Courts constituted in exercise, by the Army Council, of the powers sanctioned by Resolution of An Dáil of the 28th September, 1922, number 10. The first of these was held upon the 3rd inst., and the latest upon the 11th inst. The cases tried number 12. In all twelve cases the accused were charged with having possession, without proper authority, of a revolver, or rifle or ammunition. In one case the accused was convicted, and sentenced to undergo imprisonment for 12 calendar months with hard labour. This is the only case in which sentence has been confirmed and come into effect.
