Vol. 1 No. 29

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - SALE OF KELP IN ARRAN ISLANDS.

To ask the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that this is the first season within living memory in which no kelp has been sold in the Arran Islands, the English buyers not having sent ships to the islands as usual; and whether, in view of the great distress which exists, he will endeavour to secure a market for this product.

I understand that buyers of kelp on the West Coast have been unable, owing to the disturbed conditions, to do their usual business this year. I am arranging with the Minister of Agriculture for inquiries to be made through the Congested Districts Board as to the possibility of securing a market for the stock of kelp on hand and will inform Deputy O'Conaill as to the result.

Might I ask the Minister how the disturbed conditions affected the Arran Islands, where the communication is by sea?

The question states: "in which no kelp has been sold in the Arran Islands, the English buyers not having sent ships to the Islands." Surely the conditions must be disturbed.

Communications by sea are not disturbed.
