Vol. 2 No. 3

RESULT OF ELECTIONS TO SEANAD.

This is the complete result of the election by the Dáil of thirty members to the Seanad in strict mathematical order. I declare that pursuant to the terms of the Resolution passed by Dáil Eireann on the 1st November, 1922, the persons named in this list were elected to the First Seanad in the order of election specified in respect of each name:—

(1) Green, Alice Stopford.

(2) Griffith, John Purser.

(3) Douglas, James Green.

(4) O'Rourke, Bernard.

(5) Moore, Maurice.

(6) Molloy, William John.

(7) McKean, James.

(8) Costelloe, Ellen.

(9) O'Sullivan, William.

(10) McLoughlin, John.

(11) Kenny, Patk. Williams.

(12) Barrington, William.

(13) Duffy, Michael.

(14) McPartlin, Thomas.

(15) Farren, Thomás.

(16) Linehan, Thomas.

(17) O'Farrell, John Thomas.

(18) Butler, Richard A.

(19) Bennett, Thomas Westropp.

(20) Barniville, Henry.

(21) de Loughrey, Peter.

(22) Irwin, Cornelius Joseph.

(23) Mansfield, Eamónn.

(24) MacLysaght, Edward.

(25) McEvoy, Edward.

(26) Nesbitt, George.

(27) Love, Clayton, Joseph.

(28) Parkinson, James J.

(29) Counihan, John C.

(30) O'Dea, Michael.

The orders of preference are given with strict mathematical accuracy. Article 82 of the Constitution, Sub-section (e), says:—“Of the thirty elected members the first fifteen elected shall hold office for nine years, and the remaining fifteen for three years.” The first fifteen names, therefore, on the list are elected to Seanad Eireann for nine years, and the second fifteen for three years.

In that case may one enquire from the President how his nominated list is to be divided as between the remaining years? He read them in alphabetical order, and there is nothing to indicate which fifteen are to go out first.

That matter is provided for in the Constitution. If the Deputy would read the Constitution he would see it.

Yes; if the Deputy will read the Constitution he will find this:—"Fifteen to be selected by lot shall hold office for the full period of twelve years, the remaining fifteen shall hold office for the period of six years." I think they had better decide it by lot themselves.

Would you announce the total number of ballot papers issued and received?

May one ask when this Seanad is to be convened?

That is not relevant to the election at all. That is a matter for somebody else.
