Vol. 2 No. 36

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - UNEMPLOYED TEACHERS' REGISTER.

To ask the Minister for Education whether a Register of Unemployed Teachers has been set up in the National Education Office; if so, can he say how many teachers are now registered as unemployed in the Free State area; also if he can state how many teachers have secured employment through means of this register, and whether he is satisfied that it serves the purpose for which it was originally set up

A Register of Unemployed Teachers was set up in the National Education Office in 1921.

The number of teachers on the Register as unemployed in the Free State area is 84, including 21 teachers still serving, but threatened with unemployment through fall in average attendance.

The number of teachers who have secured employment through means of this Register cannot be given, as teachers do not usually notify the Department of the fact, although requested to do so when advised of vacancies.

Very little advantage appears to be taken of the Register at present, but in view of the explanation given in paragraph 3 I am not in a position to say to what extent it serves the purpose for which it was originally set up.
