Vol. 2 No. 40

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - PAYMENT OF ROAD WORKERS.

To ask the Minister for Local Government if pay sheets sent to the Galway County Council on the 20th January last were returned on the 15th February, and payment to the road workers delayed for six weeks; and whether a payment of two weeks' wages only was made while eight weeks were due; if he can suggest some means by which the payment of road workers may be made with greater regularity, so as to reduce the hardship on men who have to live on their weekly earnings.

A report has been called for, and the Deputy will be informed of the result. If delay has occurred, as stated in the question, it was probably due to lack of funds caused by the remissness of ratepayers in meeting their obligations to the County Council. Where hardships are suffered by road workers owing to their not receiving payments with regularity the primary cause is irregularism.
