Vol. 2 No. 41

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - BILLETING OF NATIONAL ARMY.

To ask the Minister for Defence whether the National Army has been billeted and maintained in the houses of the townspeople of Skibbereen since the 9th August, 1922, at the expense of the householders. Whether there is upwards of £10,000 due to the townspeople for goods and food supplied to the billeted troops, and whether it is true that no payment has been made to the majority of these people up to the present, and whether some of them had to borrow money in the banks at interest to pay for the food for the soldiers; whether an undertaking given by the military authorities in Portobello on 10th January to the representative of the people to pay these accounts will be carried out forthwith.

Troops have been billeted in Skibbereen since about the date mentioned. Amounts incurred in the town do not amount to more than about £4,500. More than 75 per cent. of them were cleared during the past month, and the balance are receiving due attention.
