Vol. 2 No. 42

[WRITTEN ANSWERS.] - COMMANDEERED BICYCLES (BALLINASLOE).

To ask the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that in spite of his statement in reply to a question in the Dáil on October 11th, 1922, that instructions had been issued for receipts to be given for all bicycles commandeered in Ballinasloe, no receipt has yet been given to Mr. Thomas Brogan, of Ballaghadereen, whose bicycle was commandeered on October 2nd by a flying column under Captain Mitchell, of Boyle, and whether, in view of the fact the application was made on four occasions from October 12th, 1922, to January 8th, 1923, without any result, he will cause Mr. Brogan's bicycle to be returned to him, if it is still fit for return, or, if it is not, to cause compensation to be given therefore.

It appears that Mr. Brogan's bicycle was not commandeered by our troops, but that at the time Irregulars were active in the area and were commandeering bicycles and other things in Captain Mitchell's name.
