PEACE PROPOSALS.

The following motion appeared in the Orders of the Day in the name of Dr. McCartan.
That Dáil Eireann records its satisfaction at the development in the South in favour of peace, and expresses the opinion that the proposals made afford a fair basis of settlement."

On Tuesday, when I asked the Dáil to postpone this motion which is on the Agenda to-day, I had hoped that developments would have taken place in the South which would have an important bearing on this Resolution. I am sorry to say that the situation is the same to-day as it was on Tuesday, and consequently I think it better, in the interests of peace, to withdraw the motion on the Agenda because I think speeches, for or against it, might retard rather than advance peace. Consequently I withdraw the motion. Of course that does not mean that the proposals or hopes for peace are abandoned.
