Vol. 2 No. 46

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - LIMERICK ROAD-MAKING PLANT.

DONCHADH S. O GUAIRE

To ask the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the County Surveyor of the Limerick County Council has reported to his Council that he is unable to utilise the plant of the Council (Brushes, Engines, Wagons) in the work of road making and maintenance; whether this state of affairs has been brought about by the action and under the direction of the Organiser of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union —Mr. J. Larkin—who accepts responsibility, with the object, as specified, of creating employment; further, is he aware that this interference will mean an estimated increase of £20,000 or tenpence in the pound, added to the rates of County Limerick, and whether there is any legal responsibility upon the ratepayers of Co. Limerick to make good this expenditure incurred by what Mr. Larkin describes as "drastic action."

A report has been called for in this matter and it will be duly considered.

Without anticipating the result of the inquiries being made, I may say that if the facts are as suggested effective steps will be taken to secure that the loss to the ratepayers, which the Deputy apprehends, will not be allowed to arise.
