[ WRITTEN ANSWERS. ] - LEIX ARRESTS.

asked the Minister for Defence if he can state the reason for the arrest of Patrick Coogan, Parkavilla, Mountrath, Leix, on 6th February, 1923, and his continued deceive tention at Portlaoighise Prison without charge or trial, and seeing that he denies having had any connection with the Irregulars, if he will recommend his immediate release, or have him brought to trial?

Coogan was arrested on suspicion of aiding Irregulars. In view of the fact that he has signed the usual form of undertaking, and, as it has been ascertained, that he never helped the Irregulars actively, his release has been ordered.

To ask the Minister for Defence if he will state the reason for the arrest of Timothy Synott, Parkavilla, Mountrath, Leix, on 6th February, 1923, and for his continued detention in Portlaoighise Prison, whether he is prepared to recommend his immediate release from prison, or have him brought to trial at once?

Synott was arrested on suspicion of having taken part in raids on trains. He has signed the usual form of undertaking and his release is being ordered.
