Vol. 3 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - PAYMENT OF AWARDS.

asked the Minister for Finance to state when the claims for compensation awarded to next of kin of the late John O'Connell, Carrignafry, Cobh, Co. Cork, deliberately murdered by three officers of the Cameron Highlanders (British Regiment) in Harbour Row, Cobh, May, 1921, will be paid, and also the compensation awarded to W. O'Connell, Blarney Street, Cork— dragged from his bed by Black and Tans about the same period, and shot in various parts of the body, and as a result is unable to follow his ordinary work, and is sorely in need of financial help—will be disbursed?

I presume that the person referred to in the second part of the question is Jeremiah O'Connell, and not W. O'Connell. As regards both these cases and that of the late John O'Connell, enquiries have now been almost completed and it is hoped to effect a settlement without undue delay, if my assumption is correct as regards Jeremiah O'Connell. I have no knowledge of the other case that is mentioned, that is John O'Connell.

I believe the Minister is correct as regards the name— Jeremiah O'Connell.
