Vol. 3 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SEIZURE OF FISHING BOATS.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that the boats engaged in Salmon Fishing on the River Slaney between Ferry Carrig and Enniscorthy were seized by National Troops on Thursday, 12th instant, without reason or excuse given; and whether he is aware that 250 persons are dependent on this fishery for a livelihood, also what steps he intends to take to compensate these men and when he intends to return the said boats and gear.

I have no information on this subject beyond that furnished to me verbally by certain Deputies. I must, therefore, refer the Deputy to the reply which, I understand, the Minister for Defence is making to a question in similar terms which has been addressed to him.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that troops seized a number of boats fishing for salmon on the River Slaney, between Enniscorthy and Ferry Carrig, and refused to give the owners of these boats any reason or excuse; and whether he intends to return these boats, and when and what compensation the owners may expect to receive.

I am aware of the seizure of the boats, which were returned to their owners on the 18th inst. Any claim for compensation will receive due consideration.
