Vol. 3 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - FARM WORKERS' ARREST.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that eight farm workers, members of the Athy Branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, were arrested over two months ago for picketing in connection with a farm workers' strike in progress in that district for the past six months; and, if so, what justification there is for keeping these men in military custody, without charge or trial, for an alleged offence arising out of a labour dispute; and whether, in view of the long period during which they have now been detained, he will order their release or immediate trial by a civil court?

The arrests in question were made on the 28th February in connection with the destruction of property arising out of the labour dispute referred to. It is proposed to hand the prisoners over to the civil authorities forthwith.
