Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 2 May 1923

Vol. 3 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - GROUPING OF RAILWAYS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, arising out of the policy of the Government as outlined by him in the Dáil on January 3rd, 1923, he has received, and if so, the nature of the report received from the Associated Railway Companies regarding their efforts to bring forward an agreed scheme of grouping; whether, in the event of their failure to agree, the Government are prepared to put forward their own scheme, as promised four months ago; whether in view of the grave and important bearing of this question upon the trade and commerce and general economic stability of the Free State, he will be prepared to set aside an early date for a full and free discussion of all the important issues involved, and which arise out of the policy already outlined?

The Railway Companies have not so far come to an agreement as to a grouping scheme, but following on discussions which have taken place with the principal companies on the present position it is possible that the further consideration they are now giving to the matter will result in a basis of agreement. I do not think that a debate would at the moment carry the question much further, but if there is a general desire for a debate it can no doubt be arranged.

Can the Minister say what is the length of the extended period given to railway companies to reconsider their position?

I understand there is no precise period fixed upon.
