Vol. 3 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - AN ARREST IN CO. TIPPERARY.

DOMHNALL O MUIRGHEASA

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the reason for the arrest and continued detention of Edward Ahern, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary; further, whether he is aware that as a result of the treatment he received during his imprisonment in Templemore Barracks, this man, who is over 60 years of age, is now in hospital, and if, in view of this, the Minister will order his release.

The Minister for Defence has asked me to answer this question on his behalf as follows: I am not at present in a position to give a full reply. Inquiries are being made in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that this is a matter that has been going on for the last six months? I myself have acquainted the Minister for Defence with the facts of the case over six weeks ago. I have also acquainted, in connection with the same matter, several of the departments in Portobello Barracks, and I think it is very unfair that this unfortunate man should be cast into prison without any charge being brought against him. As a result of the treatment he received in Templemore Barracks he is now in hospital. I think his continued detention is very unfair, seeing that his wife and children are left without any means of support.

Mr. O'HIGGINS

I do not know whether Deputy Morrissey's statement should be called a supplementary question or not, but I desire to say that I can give him particulars with regard to that case in my department.
