Vol. 3 No. 16

ESTIMATES.—ORDER OF PROCEDURE.

With regard to the Orders of the day, might I suggest, for the convenience of Deputies, that when we are dealing with Estimates for public services some indication should be given as to how far we are likely to go on a particular day in dealing with these Estimates. We know the order in which the Estimates will be taken, but when there is no limit set it is impossible to say, for instance, that three sets of Estimates will be taken on a particular day, because the Dáil might decide that there was only time to deal with one set. If we were to decide that not more than three sets would be taken on a particular day, I think it would be a matter of great convenience to Deputies.

Deputies are aware, from the letter sent out to them, of the order in which the Estimates will be taken. With regard to the other point, that we should set down a number of Estimates for a particular day, and say that no more will be taken on that day, that is a matter on which I would have to consult the Minister for Finance on every occasion on which the Estimates appear on the Order paper. I think it would be advisable if such an arrangement were come to.
