Vol. 3 No. 16

DAIL RESUMES. - PUBLIC CHARITABLE HOSPITALS (TEMPORARY PROVISIONS) BILL, 1923.—COMMITTEE.

On this day week I undertook to ascertain certain information regarding the expenses of running sweepstakes. I have not yet completed my enquiries into that matter, and I would be glad if the Dáil would agree to defer resumption of the Committee Stage until the next-day allotted to private business. One thing I would like to call attention to is an amendment standing in the name of Deputy Thrift. As it stands at present it will require to be redrafted. For instance, it says, "in line 22 to add at the end." Line 22 and several other lines were deleted by the acceptance of Deputy O'Brien's amendment this day week. I therefore suggest that this amendment of Deputy Thrift as it now stands is one that could hardly be very satisfactorily proceeded with, and I suggest deferring the resumption of the Committee Stage and the re-drafting of the amendment.

There would be no difficulty in fitting in the amendment if it were passed.

Considerable difficulty. It would mean a peculiar and misuse of the English language.

Before Deputy Milroy commits himself to some of these grotesque things, does not "to add at the end of line 22" mean to add at the end of Section 1 in the Bill as drafted and submitted to the Committee?

This day week a question was raised of an alteration of the wording of an amendment, and your decision was that that could not be done unless there was general agreement in the Dáil. There will be no agreement to that re-drafting, so far as I am concerned.

Deputy Milroy desires to postpone resumption of the Committee Stage until the next day for private business.

Agreed.
