Vol. 3 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES AT GORMANSTOWN.

asked the Minister for Defence to state (1) the number of civilian employees whose services have recently been dispensed with in Gormanstown Camp; (2) the reasons for dispensing with their services; (3) whether an undertaking was given that these men would get an opportunity to attest; (4) whether in fact they did not get that opportunity; (5) whether those of them who are willing to attest will be restored to their employment in the camps; and (6) by whom is the work the dismissed men were engaged upon now being done.

I understand that 47 employees who were employed by the Office of Public Works on the Repair and Maintenance of Premises and Lighting and Water Supply Services were recently discharged consequent on the taking over of responsibility for such work by the Army Work Corps. An undertaking was not given that these men would have an opportunity to attest, and it is regretted that such an opportunity cannot be given at present, as recruiting is stopped.
