Vol. 3 No. 18

INCREASE OF RENT AND MORTGAGE INTEREST (RESTRICTIONS) BILL, 1923.—FIRST STAGE.

A Chinn Chomhairle, the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Restrictions Act, 1920, which was emergency legislation to control increases in rent and mortgage interest in respect of certain dwellings and business premises, is due to expire on the 24th June next. In the circumstances, a Departmental Committee was set up in January of this year to inquire into and report on the operations of the Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions) Act, 1920, and to advise whether or not the said Act should be continued, and, if continued, in what respect amendments, if any, were necessary or desirable. The Committee reported in due course, and Deputies have had a copy of their report for some weeks. As the Committee have recommended that control is still necessary, I now move for leave to introduce a Bill, entitled "Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions) Bill, 1923," this being a Bill "to amend and continue certain restrictions with respect to the increase of rent and recovery of possession of premises in certain cases, and the increase of the rate of interest on and the calling in of securities on such premises, and for purposes in connection therewith."

I beg to second the motion.

Question put and agreed to.
Bill ordered for Second Reading on Tuesday, 5th June.
