Vol. 3 No. 21

[ WRITTEN ANSWERS. ] - CO. TIPPERARY MAN'S ARREST.

DOMHNALL O MUIRGHEASA

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the reason for the arrest and continued detention of Edward Ahern, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary; further, whether he is aware that as a result of the treatment he received during his imprisonment in Templemore Barracks this man, who is over sixty years of age, is now in hospital, and if, in view of this, the Minister will order his release.

Aherne was arrested in connection with the forcible release of cattle seized by troops for trespass. There appears to be no foundation for his allegation of ill-treatment nor any doubt that, in spite of his age, he was a ringleader in agrarian trouble. His release is not recommended at present.
