Vol. 3 No. 21

[ WRITTEN ANSWERS. ] - BICYCLE COMMANDEERED.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that a lady's bicycle was commandeered by Free State troops from the house of Mrs. H. Brennan, of Lower Salthill, Galway, on the night of the 15th September, 1922; that a receipt for the bicycle was given by Lieutenant Marion; that several applications have been made for the return of this machine, and if he will now give directions for the return of the bicycle or the payment of compensation therefor; further, to ask the Minister if he can say whether the Army authorities are yet in a position to return all the bicycles commandeered by them in Galway and Ballinasloe area during last autumn, and how soon will this be done.

A bicycle was taken by troops from the house of Mrs. Brennan on the ground that it was being used in the service of Irregulars. In view of the reasons for its seizure it is not yet advisable to return it, and the question of compensation cannot be considered.

As regards bicycles commandeered in Galway and Ballinasloe, arrangements are being made to return them to their owners.
