Vol. 3 No. 22

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - UNPAID POSTMEN IN MID-CORK.

asked the Postmaster-General, if he is aware that postmen in Mid-Cork in a number of cases have been paid no wages since 20th January, 1923; that part of the Irregular campaign consisted in threatening postmen, and in many cases bags were taken from these postmen, so that deliveries were irregular, and that this state continued from three to ten weeks, during which time no wages were paid, and that repeated applications have been made for payment without result.

There is no knowledge that any postmen in Mid-Cork have not been paid the wages due to them, but if details of any case are furnished the matter will be speedily inquired into.

The wages of a number of postmen were discontinued for various periods as a consequence of their refusal to perform their duties because they had been threatened by Irregular forces. Wages were withheld, however, only in cases where no other useful employment could be found temporarily for the men concerned.

Is the Postmaster-General aware that in certain cases the town postmen for Macroom, who are on the permanent staff, were threatened, and refused to bring letters to the outlying districts, and that the temporary men walked into Macroom, got the letters and delivered them, and that these men have not been paid their wages?

Perhaps it would be better if the Deputy would give me the facts.
