CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - DISTRESS IN NORTH-WEST CLARE.

DOMHNALL O MUIRGHEASA

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received reports as to the prevalence of exceptional distress in the Doolin district of North-West Clare, and whether he can offer any prospect of relief being afforded by the commencement of works for the improvement of the pier at Ballaghaline or the reopening of Doonagore Stone Quarries, or otherwise.

On the 30th May of last year a report was received from the Ministry's local inspector stating that acute distress existed in the district mentioned. The County Surveyor made a recommendation to the Ministry that £500 should be allocated for the improvement of Ballaghaline Pier, in the Doolin district, out of the £3,000 allocated to Clare County from the Dáil Distress Grant of £100,000. No proposals for that district were, however, included by the County Council in the schemes which they submitted, and which were subsequently sanctioned by the Ministry.

Further representations in this matter were received on the 1st instant, through the Minister for Industry and Commerce, from the Doolin Branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, and inquiries are being made.
