Vol. 7 No. 2

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - CO. COURT APPEALS.

asked the Minister for Justice if he can state whether any, and if so how many, appeals from decisions in civil cases from County Courts are pending from July, 1921; and whether any steps have been taken, or are about to be taken, to dispose of such appeals, and if he will state the amount involved in such outstanding appeals.

I am informed that there are at present pending about 3,200 appeals from the County Courts. I do not know how many of these are pending all the time since July, 1921, but if the Deputy is anxious to get that figure, separately, I shall try to get it for him. As regards the amount involved, it would be impossible to give anything like an accurate figure; in most cases the amount is quite uncertain. I take it that what the Deputy really wants is an assurance that these appeals will not be allowed to remain pending much longer, and I can reassure him on that point. It will be one of the first duties of the new Courts to dispose of these arrears.
