Vol. 7 No. 19

PRIVATE BUSINESS. - RETURN AS TO RATES.

Motion by Deputy Alasdair Mac Cába:—
To move for a return showing the rates per pound valuation levied in the different countries and municipalities within the Saorstát for administration of County Council or municipal services for the current year; the proportion of rates collected for the current year to date, in the Council and municipal areas named, and the proportion of previous year's rates outstanding in the same areas.

Is the motion in the name of Deputy McCabe opposed?

No; I am willing to accept that.

I do not believe that this motion before the Dáil is a controversial one. It merely asks for a return that will be very useful to the Dáil and useful to the country, as a whole, in considering and in coming to any decision that they may have to come to in relation to local government. It is a return which will put us in the position of being able to compare the work done by the different local bodies and the position in which they stand with regard to the collection of rates and finance generally. I believe also that it will be very useful in many ways in relation to the question of this Bill proposed by the Minister for Agriculture this morning for the relief of rates. I therefore content myself with formally moving the motion.

Motion put and agreed to.
