Vol. 7 No. 24

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - SAORSTAT REPRESENTATIVE IN UNITED STATES.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he can state who is to be appointed as the representative of the Saorstát in the United States of America; if the Government of the United States has signified its approval of the appointment; by what title such representative is to be known; and from what date he is to take up his duties under that title.

It is our intention to appoint Professor Smiddy, who is at present in Washington, and presumably in case of his appointment his status will be that of Minister Plenipotentiary. This matter has not yet reached a stage at which an announcement can be made on the other parts of the question.

Is the Minister in a position to state what will be the expense on the state for this plenipotentiary at Washington?

If that is supplementary to my present Estimate it will have to come before the Dáil as a supplementary Estimate.
