Vol. 7 No. 27

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - COMMANDEERED BICYCLE.

asked the Minister for Defence if he can now state the result of the enquiries made respecting the bicycle taken by the military from Mr. John Gill, of Ticknevin, Carbury, Co. Kildare, on the 3rd July, 1922, and if he will state when Mr. Gill may expect the return of the bicycle or payment of compensation for the loss of same.

Mr. Gill was not actually in possession of a bicycle when arrested on the 3rd July, 1922. It appears that either he or a companion, who was with him, but who was not apprehended, had a bicycle when sighted by troops. The bicycle was abandoned in their attempt to elude arrest. At the time, on being questioned, Mr. Gill denied that he either owned or was in possession of the bicycle. The bicycle cannot now be traced. In the circumstances of the case it is not proposed to entertain any claim for compensation.
