Vol. 8 No. 7

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - CO. GALWAY OLD AGE PENSION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if a decision has yet been taken in the matter of the granting of an old age pension to Redmond O'Halloran, of Inishboffin, Co. Galway, Appeal No. C.F. 4201; whether evidence was produced to show that O'Halloran was appointed as schoolmaster in Glenamaddy Workhouse on the 30th July, 1872, and that the regulations required that no one under the age of 21 could be so appointed.

The answer to the first and second part of the question is in the affirmative. The decision to allow a pension of 10s a week as from the 14th April, 1924, was conveyed to the local Sub-Committee on the 15th April last. As stated in the third part of the question, the General Regulations of 1882, Article 31, fixed 21 years as the minimum age limit for appointment of schoolmasters in workhouses, but Article 32 authorised exemption from this requirement in individual cases on sufficient grounds. The facts did not warrant a decision to allow the pension prior to the 14th April last.
